该软体在推出不久后即获传媒好评，并与Netflix作比较。[7] 但是，该软体的原始开发者因受到来自美国电影协会（MPAA）的压力，而在2014年3月14日无预警地撤下其程式。[8] 自此，此程式与Butter Project等开发团队数度复刻以维持其运作并产出新功能。后来，原始开发团队为popcorntime.io复刻版本背书，并于2015年8月挑选其为官方版本的继承者。[9] 在2015年10月，MPAA取得了由法院发出的禁制令，以阻止加拿大的popcorntime.io程式设计师[10]，其后取得其网域名称[11]。但是，该计画随即重新出现于另一新网站popcorntime.sh上[12][13][14][15]。
